In 1995, Nicaragua witnessed the birth of its Spanish language school industry, led by Nicaragua Spanish Schools (NSS), founded by American Paul Martin. This innovative initiative began with just two schools, strategically located in the emerging tourist destinations of Granada and Estelí. NSS’s early success was built on a team of instructors trained in Granada, Nicaragua, by Spanish teachers from Costa Rica. This training introduced a high standard of language education and laid a solid foundation for the industry.

By 1996, NSS had expanded to four locations—Granada, Estelí, León, and San Juan del Sur—capitalizing on Nicaragua’s growing reputation as a welcoming destination for American visitors. Demand skyrocketed, and by 1998, NSS was at its peak, hosting hundreds of students who immersed themselves in intensive Spanish programs lasting from two to six months.

Among the dedicated team in Granada was Sandra Espinoza (RIP), whose background made her an invaluable asset to NSS. Not only was she a skilled educator, but she was also a respected figure in the local community. Sandra was part of the Granada Culture Palace, an activist in local volunteering, and a member of the Association of Cultural Promoters (APC). Her deep knowledge of Nicaraguan culture and local tourism made her the ideal candidate to serve as the local director of NSLS, enriching the program with her expertise and dedication to cultural preservation and education. Alongside her sister, Maria Lidia Espinoza, a Spanish graduate from Nicaragua’s National University (UNAN), Sandra helped pass on her knowledge to a second generation of teachers, solidifying the foundation of Spanish instruction in Nicaragua.

In December 2004, due to health concerns, Paul Martin stepped away from the business, entrusting the five thriving NSS locations—Granada, León, Managua, San Juan del Sur, and Estelí—to his loyal coordinators.

In 2005, just six months after the transition, a group of teachers in Granada sought control and eventually dissolved NSS Granada. This led to the creation of three new Spanish programs: Cocibolca Spanish School, School Express, and Casa Nica Spanish School, though only one of these programs remains active today. Seeking peace and a focus on their passion for teaching, Sandra and Maria Lidia launched SOL, an acronym for Seeds of Learning. They also supported other initiatives, such as AVE Nicaragüita (2005–2018) and GSL Spanish School (2009–2014), which played a fundamental role in training a new generation of Spanish teachers.

In 2009-2010, Sandra’s son, Carlos Cruz, who was then Enrollment Coordinator for SOL, began collaborating with Lyndon Stinson, an American from Minnesota who owned Viva Spanish School in Managua. Their synergy led to the creation of Open NSLS, an initiative to unify former NSS directors and blend the strengths of Nicaragua’s original Spanish programs with an American-style approach to customer care and program management.

The crisis of 2018 marked a turning point for Spanish language programs in Nicaragua. Of more than 60 programs, only a few remain active today. Among these survivors are SOL in Granada, now directed by Sandra’s youngest daughter, Verónica Espinoza; her aunt Maria Lidia; Carlos Cruz; and the NSLS Nicaragua network, which includes former NSS teachers and their successors. With Nicaragua’s tourism industry facing ongoing challenges, online Spanish classes have emerged as a vital solution, allowing more than 80 experienced teachers to continue their mission of teaching Spanish as a second language.
